A cover letter is often a requirement for a job application. Some say it provides a way for you to introduce yourself and highlight your qualifications for a specific position, others say it is a pain in the a$s.
In an ideal world, cover letters will become extinct, but until then here are some tips on how to write an effective cover letter:
Tailor your letter to the specific job and company. Research the company and position, and use the information you learn to customise your letter. Mention specific qualifications or experiences that make you a good fit for the role.
Keep it concise and to the point. A cover letter should be one page or less (unless stated otherwise), and should focus on the most relevant information. Avoid repeating information from your resume, and instead, use the letter to add context and explain why you're a good fit for the position.
Use a professional tone and format. The cover letter should be written in a formal, business-like style. Use a clear and easy-to-read font, and make sure to proofread for spelling and grammar errors. There is absolutely no excuse for spelling errors on a resume!
Highlight your accomplishments. Use specific examples of your accomplishments and successes to show how you can contribute to the company. Be sure to back your statements up with details of how you achieved your accomplishments.
Express enthusiasm for the position. Show that you are excited about the opportunity to work for the company, and explain why you are interested in the position.
Make it personal. Address the letter to a specific person if possible. If not use a general salutation like "Dear Hiring Manager"
End with a call to action. Request an interview, or express your availability to speak with the hiring manager about the position.
By following these tips, you can create a cover letter that effectively showcases your qualifications and demonstrates your interest in the position. Remember, the cover letter is your chance to make a great first impression, so take the time to make it as stand out.
As easy as it is to submit the same cover letter for every application, you will stand out from the sea of applications if you tailor your letter to match the role.
